The race will take place at the Lake Superior View Golf Course, on County Highway C just 1/2 mile from downtown Washburn. Headquarters, start and relay changes will all happen at the club house at the top of the hill, right alongside Highway C. This makes a great area for spectators to see the participants at various times during the event. All legs will start at the club house, will do loops around various trails, then end at the club house.
Racers will not start the race all together at the same time. Instead, participants will start on a fixed interval (every 15 seconds). This allows for a less crowded course. We expect there will be instances when racers will be passing one another (even biker passing skier, biker passing runner, etc...) and this format will create more orderly racing. Cooperation and courtesy will be expected from all athletes in these situations. The final race timing will take into account the staggered start times.
We are hoping for perfectly groomed snow and 28 degrees temperatures, but this is January in northern Wisconsin and the weather could do anything. We plan to hold this race in (nearly) every weather condition, and will adapt the course as needed. For example:
-No snow - change to a run-bike-run format
-Tons of softy, mushy snow - reduce the distances to keep the event to 1.5 - 2.5 hours in duration
-Really cold - reduce distances, add frostbite checks and bring extra wood for the bonfire
So plan on getting here and having fun no matter what the condition!
